When I think of the South, two things come to mind….bourbon and bacon. I mean, what can be better? As I have been researching cocktails that are specific to each state in America, the Alabama Slammer was pretty much all I found for Alabama and I just could not bring myself to feature that for this project. Now do not get me wrong, I have nothing against this iconic cocktail, I just do not care for super sweet drinks and wanted to find something unique. Low and behold, I came across the “Smokehouse” which was featured on the popular food blog, The Kitchn in honor of the fifty states and their cocktails. The original article was published on the site Grub Street and will serve as my guide for cocktails on this project.
What drew me most to this cocktail was the fact that it is made with bourbon that is infused with bacon fat. Yes, bacon fat! Always wanting to try something new, I infused a bottle of of Temptation Bourbon with a cup of bacon fat and the result was a smooth and velvety tasting bourbon with subtle hints of smokey bacon. I then added some local honey and lemon juice and enjoyed it in a bacon-salt rimmed glass with an orange and a piece of crispy bacon as garnishes.

After looking at their food and drink menu, I have added them to my bucket list. I was pleasantly surprised with this cocktail and can’t wait to share it with my bacon-loving friends. This was my first time infusing bourbon with bacon fat and now I am hooked! Next I am going to experiment with jalapeño bacon fat and other bourbons such as honey and smoked maple. The possibilities are endless. Cheers!
- 2 ounces bacon-infused bourbon
- 1 tsp local honey
- splash of sour mix or fresh lemon juice
- bacon salt for rim (optional)
- Combine ingredients in a mixing tin with ice and stir.
- Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.(optional: rim with bacon salt)
- Garnish with an orange wedge and a crispy strip of heavily smoked country bacon.
