We all have that special place in our hearts that will always feel like home. For me, that place is Datz. I have written about them numerous times in both of my blogs and they never cease to amaze me. My son Rocco, a.k.a. The Nutella Fella, is a budding food blogger at just ten years of age. Datz is his favorite restaurant in Tampa and is his most requested dining destination.
Over the last few months, Rocco has been telling me that kids at school would tease him and call him “Rocco Taco,” which he hated. One particular day he was very upset about it and I told him that they were just jealous because everyone loves tacos and that he has a cool name. He thought about it for a few days and then decided to embrace it. As we were having dinner one night he told me that he wanted to open up his own place called “Rocco’s Italian Tacos” and serve unique tacos with an Italian twist. As always, I try to encourage his ideas and decided to reach out to Datz to see if we could do something with his idea. Of course, they were more than willing to help make Rocco’s dream a reality and hosted an intimate Rocco’s Taco Night for us and a few friends.
Our first taco was a Chianti-braised short rib with wild mushroom risotto and topped with ratatouille and red cabbage. WOW! The short rib was so tender and just melted in my mouth. Kudos to Chef Keith Williamson for creating such a beautiful blend of flavors. Everyone really enjoyed this taco and Rocco loved the creativity that was put into it.
We ended on a sweet note with doing something only Datz can do….a Chocolate Chip Pistachio Cannoli Waffle Taco. Be still my heart it was just what I needed. My daughter is picky and did not want to try the short rib taco but this one she loved and wanted seconds and thirds. I have always loved cannolis and this was such a brilliant idea. Rocco is anxious to make these at home so we will be trying some out this weekend.
Rocco had such a great time and is ready to start working on his own creations in the kitchen. Thank you Datz for everything you do for the food community. Words can’t express our gratitude for making this such a special evening.Pin It
